Roche Castle
Roche, Hackballscrosss, Dundalk, Co. Louth
This towering castle is among the most spectular in Ireland and still stands to this day in the neighbouring parish of Roche, less than a 5 minute drive from Callans. Situated upon a rocky hilltop, this Norman castle dating from the 13th Century, the castle was originally known as ‘Castlellum de Rupe’ or de la Roche. It was formerly a frontier castle for the Pale and served as a controlling point for those traveling to nearby Armagh. Visitors to the castle will not be disappointed, but one must take not of the ghost that lies within!
